Project Description

Highftech, in collaboration with Consorzio Esperienza Energia, analysed its energy consumption in order to define the strategies necessary to minimise the environmental impact of its activities. In particular, this involved installation of solar paint on the shed windows installation of a photo-voltaic system with 45 KW peak power to cover current and future needs (investments already planned)

Objectives

The solar paint is intended to reduce internal solar radiation, facilitating cooling and thus improving working conditions. The photo-voltaic system is intended to cover 40% of Highftech’s electricity needs by consuming 56% of the energy produced and feeding the remaining 44% into the grid

Results

The solar paint was applied at the beginning of the summer season and the results were immediate with improved indoor environmental conditions that reduced the use of air conditioners The photo-voltaic system went into operation in October, but taking into account the current season, it meets the forecasts of energy produced

Group Windows Shutter for Axiom Station Axiom Station: extension of human presence into low Earth orbit.

The Axiom station will be the world’s first commercial space orbital infrastructure as a next-generation platform for human-assisted microgravity research, product development and production. Following approval by international partners, the module is expected to begin its work expanding the usable and habitable volume of the ISS, connected to the ISS Node 2 module.

The Axiom modules will then detach and operate as an independent commercial space station, serving as a laboratory for microgravity experiments (regenerative medicine, accelerated disease modelling, pharmaceutical research and development, materials science, fluid physics, combustion science), microgravity manufacturing (fibre optics alloys and superalloys, medical implants, 3D bioprinting), hosting both private and professional astronauts (training and preparation for long missions), as research for human deep space flight (studies of human physiology and psychology, development of technologies enabling the extraction and use of materials/substances available in the cosmic environment)

Based on its successful past experience in the development of subsystems for the International Space Station, HFT was selected by Thales Alenia Space, as responsible for the design, development, assembly and testing of the Windows Shutter subsystem, as part of the windows, installed in the primary structure of the Axiom modules.

Each window is equipped with a Window Shutter Assembly (WSA) that is able to completely cover the area of visibility, in the closed configuration, and does not interfere with the window’s field of view or other features on the Pressurised Module when in the open position. Specifically, the Window Shutter Assembly (WSA), in the closed configuration, performs several functions: – prevents external light from entering the crew compartment when needed by the crew; – It acts as thermal protection for the crew compartment and the plastic windows underneath; – It provides shielding against micrometeorites and debris, in addition to the shielding of the windows themselves

The Window Shutter Assembly (WSA) must remain in the closed position during module transport and launch, and is held in this position by special docking systems (HDRM, Hold Down and Release Mechanisms) that are released into orbit. Once the Window Shutter Assembly (WSA) is released, it will be manually operated by the astronauts from inside the module.

HFT participates in the LightCoce H2020 project focusing on building an Ecosystem for the up-scaling of lightweight multi-functional concrete and ceramic materials and structures. In particular HFT is one of end users bringing a test case in the field of lightweight ceramic application in space field.

26 partners, from 9 EU countries, participate in the LightCoce consortium, representing 5 Large Enterprise 8 RTDs, 12 SMEs, and 1 Association!

This material offers a unique combination of properties unlike any other technical material: it is white, odourless with no offgassing and zero porosity, and allows mirror-like surface finishes with centesimal dimensional tolerances. It remains constant up to 800 °C, but can even reach 1000 °C under load for a relatively short time without creep phenomena or plastic deformation. It has low coefficients of thermal expansion even at high temperatures and is an excellent electrical insulator.
